What is Early Neuro Stimulation (ENS)

What is Early Neuro Stimulation and what are the benefits?

It is believed that ENS may provide stimulation to the developing puppy’s endocrine system and cause him/her to develop more ability to deal with stressful events later in life. This may lead to better learning and an improved ability to cope with adversity. Though some of this belief stems from the benefits of ENS shown in other species, it has also been advanced by unpublished work conducted as part of a US Military Working Dog (MWD) training program called “Bio Sensor,”  Specific claims on the effects of “Bio Sensor” include “improved” heart rate, “stronger” heartbeats and adrenal glands, and increased stress tolerance and disease resistance (Battaglia, 2009), although how these effects were measured has not been specified.  The exercises must be carefully administered, as if you put too much stress on these young puppies it could be detrimental to their development.

The standard time to do the Ens stimulations is provided from day 3 to 16 days old and can extend into longer periods.

We have been doing ENS with our puppies for over 20 years and can definitely see a difference in a litter that has had ENS and one that did not.  We see a stronger and faster human connection between puppy and handler at a younger age.  Puppies are able to handle new exposures with less stress as a young puppy and their ability to relax with handling happens much earlier than a puppy that didn't receive the stimulation.  Below is a video of the handling techniques.
